Every nation of the world has aspirations to be great. Indeed, the challenges of economic and social progress has for a long time remained important in the hierarchy of needs of society. Thus, different nations adopt varied strategies in achieving economic and social progress. Development planning has been a consistent phenomenon in Nigerian administration. Infrastructural development both economic and social is one of the major determinants of sustainable development, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. This paper x-rayed the importance of socio-economic development and the challenges of sustainable development in Nigeria. It examines various concept of the phenomenon as regards socio-economic development, challenges of sustainable development. The paper also determined the linkages between social-economic development and sustainable development. From the various works reviewed so far, there was a conclusion that for economic growth to be stimulated there is need for sustainable development and implementation strategies so as to avoid wastage in the area of infrastructural development. Recommendations that would help foster socio-economic development in Nigeria were also profound.
