An inherent element of research is data. Measuring instruments as tools for data collection rank high among the factors that impact on research quality. A form of measure that is most common in the field of social sciences is self-report. However, for a self-report measure to be useful it must satisfactorily meet some psychometric properties such as reliability and validity). Like other forms of measures, reliability and validity are the basic standard against which the adequacy and accuracy of self-report measure are evaluated in scientific research. Sadly, these requirements for self-report measure are usually not given adequate attention by both measure developers and researchers. Largely, self-report measure developers do not comprehensively assess and document these psychometric properties, while several researchers do not adequately consider them when adopting self-report measure for their studies. This paper calls for adequate consideration for reliability and validity in the process of developing self-report measure, conducting research and receiving research results.
